I wasn’t really sure if it was worth the travel time and effort to visit Nazca, Peru and see the famous Nazca Lines. We could not afford an extra $100 a piece to fly around in a chartered plane to view from above so why bother?
I’m very grateful that we did, and learned that what is hardly given a mention in most guidebooks and not written about much on the Web i.e. taking a local bus to the metal viewing platform showed above and seeing a minute portion of the ancient geoglyphs up close and personal – is incredibly cool.
You can see how they are not lines, but basically shallow, skinny trenches dug out in the sand and formed into patterns – massive shapes of trees, birds, mammals (killer whale, monkey) and other figures.
The town itself is very uninspiring, with basic hotels and a few decent restaurants. The photo above is to show the metal sculptures scattered around, but isn’t representative of the town itself, at all. Casa Andina is an upscale hotel chain located throughout Peru… not where the awesome teen and I spent much time, that’s for sure 🙂
The photo below is representative of the local feel and look of the town, and a sweet little spot a block from the market that is open early for breakfast with fresh juices and various meat-filled sandwiches to choose from.
