The town of Colchani at Salar de Uyuni & salt processing. A steady stream of tourist-filled jeeps come through this town, on their way to the Salar de Uyuni for either a day trip or multi-day, overnight adventure.
This one road ‘sneeze and you will miss it’ town is where the salt is processed from the salt flat and it’s a lot of salt – around 25,000 tons. In addition to the production of salt, the locals set-up stands along the street with hand-knitted hats, scarves and gloves and various other clothing and jewelry.
The video walks you down the main street, showing items for sale and one cute, local resident… a wandering pig. The second video below, is a quick walk-through of one of the houses they process salt in.
The town of Uyuni is about 20 minutes from Colchani, and where most tourists bus into to start their tour, with an abundance of tour operators vying for your dollars on every corner.
After Colchani it is on to the salar to visit a salt hotel with museum and then to Fish Island for some time to relax and enjoy the immense vistas of a never-ending, white horizon.
