The Patagonia Express in Esquel, Argentina. Esquel is home to one of the only long-distance, narrow-gauge steam engines that are still in operation. The round-trip, three hour scenic journey from Esquel to the tiny town of Nahuel Pan is very popular.
Entering the train to grab a vinyl upholstered seat felt like walking into a child’s amusement park ride. The interior was very small compared to more modern passenger trains with low ceilings.
It’s a comfortable ride to Nahuel Pan with of course lovely views and the town is a sweet spot to roam around in for an hour. There are two, small museums, both featuring local artisan crafts, weavings and paintings.
Various forms of colorful rocks are on display that have been gathered by local Mapuche from the surrounding hills; small ones for sale cracked in half to show the glittering treasures inside.
