Why I Love Photographing People

Photographing objects is fairly straight-forward, and you can play with the technicalities of the shot at your leisure. Photographing people (average folks, not movie-star gorgeous super models) is challenging; getting great shots often times very difficult.

I know, I take shit photographs – even worse as I get older from fibromyalgia issues in my neck and jaw. I was mugged years ago and had a bag strapped around my neck that was ripped-off while I was pulled down a set of stairs.

Most of the injuries healed, but the twisting of my neck created years of chronic muscle spasms/tissue pain that wouldn’t respond to treatment.

If I smile – or try to – I look like I am painfully grimacing after being whacked with a stick on the back of my head… which is how I do feel some days.

Needless to say, I stay straight-faced in photos as a rule, and prefer not to be photographed in general!

But I love photographing others, consider it a privilege and when the shots come out complimentary, it makes my day. Someone entrusting little ol’ me with their lovely face deserves to have that face portrayed in a positive light.

At least that’s my take on it.

We jumped all over the South American continent over a period of 4 1/2 years (from 2007-2012) and is where the majority of my current shots were taken. Here are a few favorite “People” photos from our travels, in addition to the shot above of a sweet girl in Chivay, Peru.

A Few Favorite People Photographs

The below is a shot of sweet lady in Colca Canyon, Peru and a backpacker from Buenos Aires who was visiting Purmamarca the same time as we did.

Below is a Galapagos Island’s shot of cute family that at first – obviously! – did not want to be photographed, but then relented; I think is a fun shot.

I wasn’t able to eat at the time at their lovely restaurant ‘Comedor Pablita’ so I guess I’ll just have to return to Puerto Ayora; oh darn. 🙂

Another reluctant subject… one of the gals at the coffee shop near where we lived in Miramar, Argentina. She wanted to view the photo after, afraid it didn’t look good. Sigh… looks beautiful and photogenic people make me jealous!
