Eating steak at the Mercado del Puerto in Montevideo, Uruguay. Not just any steak, but huge slabs of Uruguayan beef from the open grill… point out what you’d like and then have it served to your table with fresh salad and bread rolls. Roasted chicken and fresh seafood fans will not be disappointed either.
Parillas (grills in English) like you see in the photo to the left are all over the place at the Port Market, and you just walk around and decide what looks like the best place to have your meal then have a seat.
The market building is a large, open and an attraction in an of itself, originally a train station. Mercado del Puerto is located in Ciudad Vieja (Old Town). You can take a short walk through to get an idea what it is like in the video, shot before the lunch rush hit.
If in Montevideo for the weekend, don’t miss the large Sunday street market – called Ferria Herrera or Tristán Navaja. I was told both names on different occasions and just gave up trying to figure out which was the official, correct one 🙂 A very popular tourist attraction, any cab driver can get you there or local point the way.
