The best thing about Sucre, Bolivia are the markets. Sucre, Bolivia is a great city to spend time in, even hunker down for a few months. Why? It is affordable and there is plenty to do in and around the city.
One of the best things about Sucre are the markets. Not one, not two, but multiple large indoor/outdoor shopping areas with all kinds of things for sale, in addition to food items.
The three main ones are: Mercado Central, Mercado Negro (primarily shoes & clothing) and the multi-block affair Mercado Campesino.
As if that weren’t enough, there is also the popular Tarabuco Sunday Market in the small town of Tarabuco a couple hours away.
When we lived in Sucre for a month, I visited the main market in the center of town daily – Mercado Central.
It was where I went for my early morning coffee; loved being there when everyone was just starting their day, and the sun was still fresh in the sky. In the afternoon I went to buy food items for dinner; some days, I went twice!
For photographs, I would pay a few bolivianos to entice someone to let me shoot, or buy a few things at their stand, whether I needed them or not.
The video above I shot one day, after many of the locals had gotten used to me and were I think thankful for the cash I was spending… as in Bolivia (Peru as well) it can be very difficult to shoot videos or take photographs as the indigenous people do not like it.
