The shot below was taken just outside the main farmers market in Tupiza, Bolivia – Mercado Antonio Gilduran. It was a Saturday and the area was abuzz with folks from all around the city. For a video tour of the market and more photos of Tupiza click here.
I went here almost every morning during out two month long stay in Tupiza, to sit at a little wooden table on a wobbly stool at the cafeteria on the second level, sipping dark, syrupy coffee while watching the locals enjoy their traditional breakfast of coffee or juice with fried empanadas served sizzling hot and coated with sugar.
There are shops all along the perimeter of this market and all along the perimeter of the entire town! As I wandered a few blocks away there was a sidewalk stand selling licorice. I bought a piece, put it in my mouth for a taste test and promptly spit it out, all to the delight of the locals who had been eyeing me a bit suspiciously; then were laughing full-heartedly.
The licorice is for cooking and teas, not to eat like candy!
Walking on the main road from the main market to another smaller market a few blocks away the streets are lined with shops selling various food items. There is also a popular outdoor street market located outside the train station every Thursday and Saturday.
Tupiza will always hold a special place in the awesome teen and my hearts… thanks to some cool local cowboys who welcomed my son into their lives, teaching him the basics of horseback riding and how to care for the animals, as well as letting him help out as a guide taking other tourists out; love the town.
