Center for land tortoises on Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos. ‘Centro de Crianza de Tortugas Terrestres’ translated in English is “Breeding Center for Land Tortoises“. There are actually two breeding centers in the Galapagos, one is at the Charles Darwin Research Center on Santa Cruz Island and the other is on Isabella Island.
We stayed in a house just two blocks from the entrance to the Charles Darwin Research Center during our three week visit, hence the video below is of the breeding center on Puerto Ayora.
The Centro de Crianza at the Darwin Research Center was the previous home of famed Pinta tortoise ‘Lonesome George‘ who died in June, 2012. The awesome teen took the shot above during his visit.
In the photographs above is one of the turtles in the center from EspaƱola Island and a baby turtle.
I walked through the paths in the video, and yes, Lonesome George was home at the time (he died months after our visit) but being a bit camera shy. You get to see a variety of tortoises, in all stages of development; hatched eggs to adulthood.
The very short & sweet video below is of a baby tortoise eating a bit of the vegetation.
