Purmamarca was my favorite tourist town of the Humahuaca de Quebrada travel circuit and to boot, it is the closest town to JuJuy (under 2 hours). JuJuy is where you will arrive first from other areas in South America unless you traveled directly to the town of Humahuaca from Salta, Argentina.
Loved, loved, loved this tranquil little indigenous village with its few, upscale rustic hotels and restaurants alongside the local abodes plus sweet little central square with a daily market and nearby paths to walk into the desert.
One thing I almost left without trying is the Queso de Cabra empanadas made with goat cheese and corn. This would have been a big mistake as they were the tastiest empanadas I’d tried in South America.
The video shows you much of what the town is like, including a walk around the main square but not a lot of the ‘hills of seven colors‘ the area is famous for, so I’ve included the photograph at the end of this post.
Want to get a sneak preview of the view from the hilltop (photograph above right), about a 1/2 hour walk from town? There is a tourist office at the main square which will give you a map and most likely inform you that a great time to do the hike is in the early morning before sunrise.
The awesome teen gave it his best shot but woke up too late to view the rising sun. He did report back after rolling out of bed to hike up over the hills that it was a great short hike, worth the effort. He also took the video above.
The photo below I took just a few minutes outside of town where you can walk into the surrounding hillside and enjoy the beautiful, color-filled surrounds while snapping a few pics. Enjoy.
